'Alleen digitale boeken met toevoegingen hebben toekomst'

Wil een digitale uitgave in de toekomst perspectief hebben, dan moet je als maker er van alles aan toevoegen, zo betoogt Kirk Bowe van het Britse TradeMobile. Een e-boek zonder verwijzingen, filmpjes, geluid of andere speciaal toegevoegde informatie heeft weinig waarde. Hij noemt dat '3-D narratives'. Hij waarschuwt daarbij dat het daarbij niet gaat over het toevoegen van een paar gimmicks. 'It’s not about distilling high concepts or using interactive gimmickry at the expense of depth or truth. Rather it is about taking the author’s work, indeed taking the author him or herself, and creating a transformation that fits not only the technology but also the fans’ expectations of the technology.' Bowe noemt ook een typische toekomst-app: Kings and Queens van geschiedkundige David Starkey. 'The platform enables the publisher to identify every reference to the people, places, and events of the story, and cross-references these to other features appropriate to the app, such as maps, timelines, or family trees.'
